James D. Robinson III

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Partner and Co-founder, James D. Robinson III.

We will miss Jim’s unwavering integrity, steady presence and principled approach to every decision, large or small. We will cherish his deep commitment to the firm, our companies, and our investors. We will remember his legendary work ethic, reliable good humor and kind decency. Most of all, we will remember his boundless optimism and his deep belief in people.

While Jim is well known for his time as Chairman and CEO of American Express and his service as a Director of Coca-Cola, Bristol Myers Squibb and other leading Global companies, what is less well known is his work as a venture capitalist. For almost 30 years as an RRE General Partner, Jim mentored a younger generation of entrepreneurs, CEOs, and investors. He was captivated by the power of technology to enable new businesses and drive progress in the corporate world. He leaves behind a legacy of great companies and the firm he co-founded with his son, Jim Robinson IV, and Stuart Ellman.
