Stuart J. Ellman
Co-Founder, Managing Partner
Stuart Ellman is Co-Founder & Managing Partner of RRE Ventures.
Stuart Ellman is Co-Founder & Managing Partner of RRE Ventures which he started with his close friend and business school classmate, Jim Robinson, when he was 27 years old. At the time, he and Jim had nothing but the idea for a venture firm and struggled to do deals without a formal fund.
Stuart has been responsible for over forty technology investments, ranging from incubation-stage to post-revenue companies. He has invested in sectors across information technology, security, green IT, consumer-facing web companies, and enterprise software. Stuart is not a technologist, but rather a business person who utilizes technology to drive competitive advantage. He looks for big markets and superior management and has little interest in derivative companies or chasing short-lived trends in the marketplace. He currently serves as a Board Director of Bark & Co., Betaworks, Clearpath Robotics, Floored, Jibo, Kroll Bond Ratings, and Payfone.
Stuart began his career at McKinsey and Company. He later worked as a Financial Analyst at Dillon, Read & Co. where he focused on leveraged buyouts and restructurings and as an Associate at Morgan Stanley & Co., where he specialized in fixed income capital markets. After graduating from business school in 1992, Stuart became an entrepreneur, co-founding and serving as Vice President at Advisory Capital Partners, a principal investment and advisory firm. Simultaneously, Stuart co-founded InterVideo Response with Jim in early 1994, which attempted to build in-stadium touchscreen ordering systems. They were ten years too early. After deciding against launching a second business plan involving pets and vets, the two started their own investment firm late in 1994.
In addition to his work as a venture investor, Stuart serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia Business School where he has taught a popular Venture Capital Seminar to MBA students since 2002. In 2009, he taught a graduate seminar at the CDTM in Munich, Germany, a joint program with Technical University and Ludwig Maximilians University.
Stuart is also the President of the Board of the 92nd Street Y where he has served as a board member since 2001. Founded in 1874, the 92nd Street Y is a leading community and cultural center located in NYC. He has helped the 92Y utilize technology through the launches of #GivingTuesday, the Social Good Summit, and the NYC Venture Fellows program. Stuart is also on the board of The Browning School and serves as a TechStars mentor. Additionally, Stuart serves as a member of the New York City Investment Fund's Clean Tech Sector Group, the VC Advisory Group of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, and the Economic Club of New York. He is also on the Presidents Council for Wesleyan University.
Stuart holds an MBA with Distinction from Harvard University and a BA in Economics from Wesleyan University where he was a Gilbert Clee Scholar and a Horace White Fellow. Stuart lives in Manhattan with his wife, two kids, and a spoiled black cat.
