BuzzFeed, the social news website, began 2013 with almost $20 million in new financing from a team of investors lead by New Enterprise Associates, The New York Times reports.

The Series D round, totaling $19.3 million, came from NEA, RRE Ventures, Hearst Interactive Media, SoftBank, Lerer Ventures and new investors Michael and Kass Lazerow, the co-founders of Buddy Media.

The company will use the money to hire more employees, try to strengthen its presence on mobile phones and potentially add international flavors of its Web site.
